allow FDI in retail compounds the flaws in its economic policy There are several issues of importance that the general public is concerned about that are not being tackled by the government For the last three yearsthere has been a lack of governance in the country The country has also been in a state of impairment due to the many alleged scams and cases of corruption that have been unearthed That is why the government is faced with so many demonstrations against corruption and has to deal with public servants virtually not working because of its lack of decisivenesswhich has resulted in a slowdown in GDP growth The UPA has brought down the countrys GDP growth to 55 per centand to compound that the government has decided to allow foreign direct investment in multibrand retailwhich is against the interests of the Indian people The country is going through a bad phase in part due to the incompetence of the people at the helm In my viewa government elected by the people should serve the country for a full five yearsbut the way this government has demonstrated its lack of concern for the poor and is alleged to be involved in so many scamsthe day is not far when it may have to go We are followers of Ram Manohar Lohia and Charan Singh and our ideology and actions are based on their thinking FDI in multibrand retail would hurt kirana shops and small vendors in our country This is not the same Congress party as in the pastuntil the time of Rajiv Gandhi Even Sonia Gandhi does not seem to care about the pooras she has maintained her silence about the measures her government is taking measures that will have an adverse impact on 25 crore people We will come out on the streets against the governments move to bring FDI in multibrand retail and continue to fight against the decision The market share of unorganised retail in the country is 97 per cent of the total retail sectoras compared to the organised retail sectorwhich accounts for only 2-3 per cent The unorganised sector contributes about 14 per cent to the GDP and absorbs a large part of our labour force If FDI is allowed in multibrand retailthose affected will primarily be traditional kirana shopsgeneral merchantspaan beedi shopsetc Worst affected will be the small vendors women carrying small items over their heads and others selling items on roadside pavements The government should instead concentrate on increasing agricultural growth to 4 per cent per year and allocate its natural resourceslike minerals and metalsat the best prices The Indian economy is supposed to be based on agriculturebut now agriculture is growing only at 225-25 per cent per year India is endowed with several natural resourcesincluding many metallic and non-metallic minerals The mining sector is an important segment of the Indian economy and contributes around 226 per cent to the GDP Since Independencethere has been a pronounced growth in the production of minerals and metals in terms of value and quantity The country produces as many as 87 minerals The total value of mineral production (excluding atomic minerals) has been estimated at more than Rs 202 lakh crore The estimated value for fuel minerals accounts for around Rs 140 lakh croremetallic minerals at around Rs 41828 crore and non-metallic mineralsincluding minor mineralsat around Rs 23537 crore Howeverin my viewthe minerals should have been valued at more than Rs 8-10 lakh crore had these been sold at best prices This is important because it shows that the government can and should utilise these resources fully in order to bring down the fiscal deficit Now take the subsidy on dieselwhich is to the extent of Rs 84000 crore out of a total subsidy of Rs 160 lakh crore on petroleum products On one handthe government has failed to increase agricultural production and properly allocate its natural resources On the other handit has put a burden on the exchequer by subsiding diesel for mall ownersbig buildingscell towerscar ownersetc Why cant the governmentin this era of computerisationproperly target the subsidy towards needy consumerssuch as farmers and transporters of essential commodities It is necessary for the government to put in place a mechanism to properly target beneficiariesso that the expenditure is rationalised Besides such impractical government policiessome corporate houses are also reported to be involved in various corruption cases For instanceit has been alleged that Naveen Jindala business owner and Congress MPgot preferential allotment of coal blocks for his companies The nexus between big business and government is getting strongerwith many businessmen joining politics primarilyit seemsto serve their own interests The government should come out with a white paper on the wealth of selected top 150 or so big corporate houses for the periods between 1991-96 and 2004 to present I have decidedin the next session of Parliamentto demand that the government place on record the wealthturnover and businesses of the top 150 businessmen from 1991 onwards for the edification of the general public This government has destroyed the economy of the country by making bad decisions and becoming embroiled in many cases of alleged corruptiondue to whichI am surethe Congress party will face diminished public support in future The writer is a Lok Sabha MP presidentJD(U) court judge last week the Lokniti-IBN tracker poll results released on Tuesday would be a huge relief and morale booster for Kerala chief minister Oomen Chandy According to the poll the incumbent UDF (United Democratic Front) is projected to win 11-17 out of the 20 seats in the state and people are more satisfied with Chandy personally than his government The CPM-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) is likely to win only 4-8 seats A few days ago another poll by Malayalam channel Asianet News had predicted 11 seats for the UDF with an error margin of one percent According to the poll in many constituencies the difference in voteshare was only one percent indicating that the result could go either way Oommen Chandy AFP The results of the IBN-tracker is a crackling prospect for Chandy particularly in the face of war cries for his scalp and relentless personal attacks by the CPM The CPM which incidentally has “outsourced” five of its seats to outsiders – two Congressmen and three independents including a film actor – were cocksure that it would win all the 20 seats because people were seemingly fed up of the UDF government The Congress maintained that it would better its tally of 16 in the last Lok Sabha elections in 2009 Chandy personally has been going through rough weather because of the scams (solar and land grabbing) that his personal staff are allegedly involved in and his inability to take tough action against them The opposition charged that he was directly involved in the scams and their alleged cover ups and hence should remit his office They have taken out various protests asking for his head all of which fizzled out in a few days The CPM and its associates mainly the CPI concluded that there is an anti-incumbency wave against Chandy and the rest of the UDF particularly because of the scams and infighting within the front and hence they would win hands down The CPM was also confident because of the return of the prodigal son – VS Achtuhanandan The veteran leader who had been at loggerheads with party secretary Pinarayi Vijayan as well as with most of the party apparatus suddenly changed tracks and started siding with them He in fact backtracked on almost everything he spoke as a dissident of the party The IBN-tracker poll clearly defies the excessive optimism of the CPM and the rest of the opposition According to the poll the voteshare of UDF is still ahead of the LDF by nine percentage points The headway that it had over the LDF has come down compared to the tracker poll in January but nine percent is still quite a distance given that the election in the state is only a week away The only solace for the LDF is that 12 per cent of UDF voters among the respondents who said they might change their mind on the polling day In the case of the LDF this is only three per cent The tracker poll also shows that the UDF is ahead of the LDF in Malabar and comfortably ahead and Kochi In southern districts it’s mostly a neck-to-neck fight An interesting feature of the poll is how the efforts of the LDF to woo the majorities – not the minorities as their self-confessed benefactor – are paying off It’s an old ploy in a state where about 50 per cent of the population is composed of Muslims and Christians who traditionally back the Congress and the UDF And interestingly it’s working About 44 per cent of the Hindus said they would vote for the LDF as against 31 per cent which backed the UDF In term of the minorities 59 per cent Christians and 69 per cent Muslims said they would vote for the UDF – so much for the secular posturing of the LDF Does the murder of communist dissident TP Chandrasekharan by CPM functionaries have anything to do with the elections CPM thinks it doesn’t but the poll says otherwise About 67 per cent of the respondents said they supported the government move to hand over the case to CBI In a nutshell there’s nothing that the LDF can be happy about Somehow they aren’t getting it right The circumstances aren’t great for the UDF still the people don’t want the LDF Why Mere soul searching won’t help because what it requires is a marrow transplantation More on that after the elections Kolkata: Reigning
